In 1929, Gladstone developed this heavy riot shield to protect the police from increased use of firearms in criminal activities. The armour stopped bullets at 5 yeards(4.75 metres), and could be folded down for travel. It had narrow eye-slits for vision, and a small opening for returning fire.
The riot shield was also equipped with a sledgehammer and crowbar to break through barricaded doors.
